Our-Kids-Adults is a family of parents, caregivers and others who are working with teens or adults who have physical and/or mental disabilities and delays. This list branched from the Our-Kids list early in 1999, and many of the current members had children who grew up to teen or adulthood while subscribed to this list.
The name "Our-Kids" came from the desire to avoid the term "disability", to avoid the pitfalls of labeling our "kids" as anything but what they are: wonderful children in our lives. Although they are grown or almost grown, they will forever and always be "our kids".
The purpose of this mailing list is to give support to those who care for "our kids" who are teen-aged or older. Here we can discuss their accomplishments and defeats, share funny moments, knowing that the audience includes others who know what we are going through. We can get some idea of how others address specific problems/concerns in regards to employment, community or home living, recreation and social opporunties, and supports which our children will need throughout their lives. We can share information on medical and funding resources, techniques and equipment, as well as how to cope with relationships family and friends.
Bonds have grown out of both of these lists which have bound families and individuals, including our children, together. Our members have found that our worlds are expanded and enriched, as well as supported, from participating in both the Our-Kids and Our-Kids-Adults lists.
